The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has reiterated the need for innovation and international competitiveness in Nigeria’s accounting profession, as it formally inaugurated Alhaji Ganiyu Mustafa as the sixth chairman of its Sokoto and District Society.

The investiture ceremony, held on Saturday in Sokoto, marked a leadership transition from the outgoing chairman, Ismail Suleiman, whose tenure was praised for promoting integrity and professional excellence.

Representing the ICAN President, Mallam Haruna Yahya, at the event, Zonal Vice Chairman Mallam Ibrahim Alkali emphasised that district societies are central to ICAN’s mission, particularly in grassroots mentorship, professional development, and youth engagement programmes such as “Catch Them Young.”

“Our profession must evolve with the times. We are calling on all leaders at the district level to deepen digital skills, build global partnerships, and drive innovation,” Alkali said.

He highlighted several initiatives by ICAN aimed at keeping Nigerian accountants globally competitive, including the digitalisation of its examination process, the launch of a Small and Medium Practice (SMP) Academy, and new international certification pathways.

The Sokoto State Government, represented by Commissioner for Commerce, Trade and Industry, Bahir Abass, commended the new leadership and pledged continued support for the institute’s activities in the state.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu, through the commissioner’s goodwill message, acknowledged ICAN’s role in enhancing fiscal transparency and capacity development.
“We remain committed to collaborating with ICAN, especially in the areas of professional ethics, financial literacy, and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises,” the message stated.

Outgoing chairman Ismail Suleiman thanked his team for their commitment and urged young professionals to uphold the core values of the profession — integrity, discipline, and lifelong learning.

The event, described by stakeholders as a milestone, drew participants from financial institutions, academia, and public service. With Mustafa now at the helm, the ICAN Sokoto District Society is expected to pursue a renewed strategic direction that aligns with global best practices.

“Together, we will shape an inclusive, future-ready institute where excellence is not just a goal but a tradition,” the ICAN President said in his closing message.
