The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is set to collaborate with the Rwandan High Commission in Nigeria on advancing environmental sustainability.

This initiative follows a meeting in Abuja between NESREA’s Director General,  Innocent Barikor, and Rwanda’s High Commissioner, Ambassador Christophe Bazivamo. The discussions focused on sharing expertise and experiences, particularly in combating plastic pollution.

Barikor emphasized NESREA’s commitment to learning from Rwanda’s globally acclaimed successes in plastic waste management. Highlighting Nigeria’s push for circular economic growth and its ban on single-use plastics, he expressed admiration for Rwanda’s innovative environmental strategies. According to Barikor, this partnership will support Nigeria in adopting best practices for sustainable waste management.

In a statement on Tuesday, NESREA noted that the collaboration aims to foster capacity building through study visits and knowledge exchange. Barikor praised Rwanda’s support in training NESREA staff and called for high-level cooperation to enhance environmental protection efforts between both countries.

Ambassador Bazivamo underscored the significant challenges posed by plastic pollution and reaffirmed Rwanda’s willingness to work with Nigeria. He stressed that sustainable development is unachievable without robust environmental protection measures and lauded Nigeria’s commitment to addressing these issues.
