Albinism Association of Nigeria Appeals for Urgent Support to Combat Skin Cancer in 2025

Post Date : January 7, 2025

The Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN) has issued an urgent call for support from all tiers of government and the public to assist 40 of its members battling various stages of skin cancer. This appeal comes after the association reported the loss of 16 members to the disease in 2024. In a heartfelt New Year message delivered on Monday in Lagos, AAN’s National President, Bisi Bamishe, emphasized the critical need for immediate intervention to save lives.

Bamishe highlighted that many members of the association are enduring severe pain in hospitals or confined to their homes, isolated and suffering in silence. She underscored that skin cancer remains a life-threatening challenge for persons with albinism in Nigeria, often exacerbated by limited access to protective items and treatment. “Without immediate action, the situation could escalate further,” she warned.

The AAN president appealed for public and governmental support to fund life-saving treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. She also called for the provision of essential protective items such as sunscreen, UV-blocking umbrellas, hats, and protective clothing to help reduce the risks faced by persons with albinism.

In addition, Bamishe advocated for greater awareness campaigns to educate communities about the challenges faced by people with albinism. She urged stakeholders to sponsor programs in schools, markets, places of worship, and media outlets to combat stigma and promote early detection of skin cancer. “Awareness is a powerful tool to prevent unnecessary suffering and deaths,” she said.

As 2025 begins, Bamishe expressed hope for renewed commitment to addressing the health and social challenges faced by persons with albinism. “Together, we can create a future where no one is left behind due to their condition,” she stated, encouraging Nigerians to join hands in building a supportive and inclusive society.
