ASUU Rejects FG Loan Scheme, Plans Fresh Protests

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected its inclusion in the Federal Government’s Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), describing it as a ploy to make the union a “guarantor of loans it knows nothing about.”

In a communiqué issued after its National Executive Council meeting at Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, and signed by President Christopher Piwuna on Tuesday, ASUU demanded to be delisted from the scheme and instead called for the release of its members’ withheld three-and-a-half-month salaries.

The union also urged the government to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, address issues of funding, conditions of service, university autonomy, and review laws governing the NUC and JAMB.

“NEC resolved to organise nationwide protests across all branches on a fixed date, with press conferences to hold simultaneously,” the communiqué stated, adding that the date would be announced later.

ASUU further disclosed plans to launch the “Tertiary Institutions Transparency and Accountability Solution” to replace its earlier UTAS platform.

The Federal Government had last week launched the TISSF, a zero-interest loan scheme for tertiary institution staff, offering up to ₦10m to eligible academic and non-academic workers.
