The Kano State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a directive to its members to suspend medical services at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in response to an alleged assault on a doctor by Amina Abdullahi, the state Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs. This move comes after the NMA condemned the incident, which they described as a serious violation of medical professionals’ rights and safety. The association has demanded the immediate dismissal of Abdullahi, citing misconduct as outlined in the Public Service Rules.
The incident occurred on November 1 at the hospital’s Emergency Paediatric Unit, where a lone female doctor was attending to over a hundred patients when she was reportedly harassed and physically assaulted by Abdullahi and a group of security personnel. The NMA stated that the assault stemmed from the unavailability of a prescribed medication, a situation beyond the doctor’s control. The association expressed deep concern over the abuse of power by an official responsible for public welfare, highlighting systemic issues within the healthcare system, including chronic understaffing and inadequate resources.
In a statement signed by NMA Chairperson Abdurrahman Ali and Secretary Ibrahim Muhammad, the association emphasized that such incidents undermine the morale and safety of healthcare workers. The NMA has called for urgent reforms to address the chronic challenges facing medical professionals, including setting a minimum benchmark for doctor-to-patient ratios to prevent further overstretching of staff. They also demand enhanced security measures within hospital units to protect both staff and patients.
The NMA has given its members a 48-hour ultimatum to indefinitely suspend services at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, a critical facility in the region. While acknowledging the impact this decision will have on patient care, the NMA stressed that this painful choice is necessary to draw attention to the unsustainable working conditions faced by healthcare workers. “Our doctors and healthcare staff deserve a safe, respectful, and adequately supported working environment,” the NMA stated.
In light of these events, the NMA is urging Governor Abba Yusuf to take immediate action to address the serious issues raised. They emphasize that the safety and dignity of healthcare workers must be prioritized to avoid further disruption in an already strained healthcare system. “This incident should serve as a catalyst for the much-needed reforms,” the NMA concluded, reaffirming their commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of healthcare professionals across Kano State.
