Expert Reveals Proven Strategies for High Maize Yield in Imo State

Post Date : February 5, 2025

Maize farmers in Imo State have been advised to adopt best farming practices to maximize their yields amid Nigeria’s growing food insecurity. Innocent Dike, CEO of Smart Farms Services and President of the Cocoa and Plantain Farmers Association (CP-FAN), highlighted key strategies for improving maize productivity during an interview with BusinessDay in Owerri.

Dike emphasized the importance of understanding soil health before planting, noting that many farmers plant without conducting soil tests, which leads to poor crop performance. He advised farmers to assess soil nutrients and apply the necessary organic matter to enhance maize growth. Selecting high-yield maize varieties, planting at the right time, and maintaining proper spacing are also crucial factors for a successful harvest.

Effective weed and pest control are vital for maximizing yield, Dike explained. Weeds compete with maize for nutrients, stunting growth, while pests like armyworms and termites can cause severe damage if not managed early. He urged farmers to remain vigilant and adopt timely pest control measures to protect their crops.

Fertilizer application at critical growth stages is another essential practice for boosting productivity. Dike stressed that applying the right type and quantity of fertilizer ensures strong plant development. Additionally, he advised farmers to monitor weather patterns, as rainfall distribution plays a significant role in achieving optimal maize yields.

With the planting season approaching, Dike encouraged farmers to implement these strategies to improve their chances of a bumper harvest. He assured that by following these guidelines, farmers could not only meet but exceed their target yields, contributing to greater food security in Nigeria.
