Post Date : January 31, 2025

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MTN Nigeria and Tomorrow.io to develop a Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) System. This initiative will provide real-time, location-specific weather alerts to farmers via mobile SMS, helping them make informed decisions and improve agricultural productivity.

The partnership aligns with the United Nations’ goal of ensuring early warning systems for all and aims to enhance climate resilience in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By delivering timely, actionable weather advisories, the initiative will help farmers mitigate risks associated with extreme weather conditions, such as droughts and floods, ultimately boosting food security.

Speaking at the MoU signing in Abuja, NiMet Director General, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasized that the collaboration supports the food security agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He stated that providing accurate, localized climate information would empower farmers with the tools needed to adapt to changing weather patterns and maximize yields.

Anosike highlighted the strategic involvement of MTN Nigeria and Tomorrow.io, noting their expertise in telecommunications and climate intelligence. “This partnership is a game-changer, not just for the agricultural sector but for Nigeria’s broader economy. My vision is to open the climate science business to the private sector, demonstrating its vast economic impact,” he said.

With agriculture being a critical sector in Nigeria, the DCAS system will bridge the gap between climate data and practical farming decisions. This initiative marks a significant step toward leveraging technology for climate-smart agriculture, ensuring that Nigerian farmers receive the weather insights needed to protect their livelihoods and enhance productivity.
