Women in Technology in Nigeria (WITIN) has emerged as the winner of the 2024 Inspiring Women in Science Outreach Award. The organization was recognized for its efforts in promoting girls’ representation in STEM education through its Girls STEM Clubs and Outreaches program.
The award, presented by Nature in partnership with The Estée Lauder Companies, acknowledges WITIN’s commitment to providing solutions that encourage girls to pursue STEM careers. WITIN’s Executive Director and Founder, Martha Alade, received the award in London, stating that the organization works hard to inspire girls in underserved areas, believing that access to knowledge is a human right.
The award organizers praised WITIN’s clear aims and goals, which align with their mission to expand representation in STEM. They also noted the organization’s focus on girls and teachers, as well as its community-driven approach. Editor-in-Chief of Nature, Magdalena Skipper, emphasized the importance of diversity in research, stating that women’s contributions are crucial to scientific progress.
The Nature Awards for Inspiring Women in Science recognize individuals and organizations working to encourage girls and women to engage with STEM subjects. The award has been presented annually since 2016, with The Estée Lauder Companies as a partner. Senior Vice President, Global R&D, The Estée Lauder Companies, Lisa Napolione, congratulated the winners, highlighting the impact of their work on gender equality in STEM fields.
WITIN Advisory Board Chairman, Markie Idowu, described the award as global recognition of WITIN’s impact on the technology ecosystem over the past two decades. This achievement underscores WITIN’s dedication to promoting STEM education and empowering girls in Nigeria.
