The Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON) has called on the Federal Government to establish the Fisheries Institute of Nigeria (FIN) to strengthen the nation’s fisheries resources and enhance its blue economy. During her address at the 39th Annual National Conference and Meeting, as well as the 20th Fellowship Investiture Ceremony in Abuja, FISON President Dr. Ebinimi Ansa emphasized the urgent need for formalizing this institution. She stated that professionalizing the fisheries and aquaculture sectors is essential for improving capacity and aligning operations with global standards.

Dr. Ansa urged the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy to sponsor the FIN Bill as an Executive Bill for presentation to the National Assembly. She highlighted that establishing the institute would provide a structured framework for capacity building, certification, and professional development. “It will promote knowledge transfer and the adoption of best practices in fisheries management and aquaculture operations,” she noted, adding that it would also ensure a cohesive national strategy in line with international regulations, making Nigeria more competitive in both regional and global markets.

At the ceremony, President Bola Tinubu was awarded a fellowship by FISON for his role in creating a ministry dedicated to the marine and blue economy. His administration aims to reposition Nigeria as a significant player in the global blue economy, which the United Nations estimates could be worth $24 trillion by 2030 if properly harnessed. With the right investments in fisheries and aquaculture, Nigeria can leverage its extensive water resources to achieve self-sufficiency in fish production and become a major exporter.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, affirmed the conference’s theme, “Unlocking the Investment Potential of Nigeria’s Blue Economy, Advancing the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sectors for Sustainable Development,” as both timely and relevant. He noted that transferring the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy marks a pivotal moment for the sector, aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in fish production.

The Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, also addressed the gathering, stating that Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable fisheries is crucial, particularly in light of current environmental and economic challenges. She emphasized the importance of enhancing productivity, promoting research, and building capacity to ensure that Nigeria balances the needs of today with the resources required for future generations. With strategic efforts, Nigeria can turn its vast aquatic resources into a sustainable blue economy that benefits all.
