The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) and key players in the food sector have called for greater prioritisation of food safety as a core element of public health and consumer protection.
The call was made at the 3rd Food Safety Conference and Exhibition, held Tuesday at the NECA Event Centre, Ikeja, with the theme “Food Safety: Science in Action.”
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olugbemiga Aina, commended LASCOPA for driving awareness on food safety, stressing that it should become a periodic event to shape policies and promote responsible practices across the food value chain.
“Food safety is critical to consumer health and economic growth. I am confident this conference will positively influence government policies and reshape stakeholder approaches,” he said.
LASCOPA General Manager, Afolabi Solebo, added that food safety must be a collective effort involving regulators, producers, retailers, and consumers, warning that unsafe food threatens both public health and economic stability.
Kano State Consumer Protection Council Chairman, Dr. Umar Garbar, also commended the initiative, describing food safety as central to achieving Lagos’s vision of a healthy population and sustainable development.
