Post Date : August 11, 2025

The Federal Government has warned of possible heavy flooding across 15 states and 68 locations between August 10 and 14, urging residents and stakeholders to take urgent precautions.

The National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre, under the Federal Ministry of Environment, issued the alert on Sunday, naming parts of Adamawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Kwara as high-risk areas.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reports that 140,228 people in 21 states have been affected by floods so far in 2025, with 49,205 displaced, 10,663 houses damaged, and 9,454 farmlands impacted. Imo, Rivers, Adamawa, Abia, and Delta are the worst-hit states.

NEMA’s data shows 191 deaths, 94 missing persons, and 239 injuries this year. Officials cite climate change, blocked drainages, dam water releases, and poor flood control infrastructure as major causes. Experts warn that without urgent action, Nigeria’s recurring flood crisis will continue to claim lives and destroy livelihoods.
