In a bid to strengthen climate accountability and drive sustainable environmental policies, the federal government has launched a Climate Action Index (CAI) to assess, track, and rank climate efforts at the state and local government levels.

Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), Dasuki Arabi, announced this initiative during a stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja. The event, organized by BPSR in collaboration with the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity (CeFTPI) and the Centre for Climate Action, Innovation, and Engagement (CCAIE), aims to enhance transparency and foster competition in climate governance.

Arabi stated that the CAI aligns with Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Climate Change Act of 2021. “This initiative is designed to evaluate and rank subnational climate actions, ensuring they are measurable, impactful, and aligned with national climate goals,” he said.

Executive Director of CCAIE, A’Aron John, emphasized that the CAI will identify implementation gaps, promote accountability, and develop an actionable roadmap toward a net-zero future. He highlighted Nigeria’s rising emissions, which increased at a 1% Compound Annual Growth Rate from 1990 to 2021.

The CAI will focus on key pillars such as climate action plan alignment with federal targets, integration into state policies, and implementation frameworks.
