Kaduna Government Reaffirms Commitment to Fighting Malnutrition

Post Date : December 20, 2024

The Kaduna State Government has reiterated its dedication to tackling malnutrition through strategic initiatives and increased funding. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman of the State Steering Committee on Food and Nutrition and Commissioner of the Planning and Budget Commission, made the announcement during a nutrition stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna.

Ahmed revealed that the state has created a dedicated budget line for nutrition in the 2025 appropriation bill for the Ministry of Health and the State Primary Healthcare Board. Additionally, ₦50 million has been allocated for nutrition programs at the Primary Healthcare Board, and desk officers have been appointed across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to streamline efforts.

He noted significant progress reflected in the 2023-2024 National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS), including reductions in stunting, wasting, and underweight cases among children. Severe stunting rates have dropped to 16.8% from 22.1% in 2018, while severe wasting and underweight rates fell to 0.3% and 6.0%, respectively.

“These successes reflect the hard work of our nutrition team, Ministries, development partners, and other stakeholders,” Ahmed said, emphasizing the importance of continued efforts to eliminate malnutrition.

The meeting also included discussions on nutrition financing strategies and updates on the state’s nutrition status. Stakeholders from government agencies, development partners, and civil society organizations commended the state for its proactive approach and pledged ongoing support.

Kaduna State remains committed to improving nutrition and ensuring a healthier future for its residents.
