Enugu Introduces Free Ultrasound Services to Boost Maternal Healthcare

Post Date : January 28, 2025

The Enugu State Government has launched ultrasound services at Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in a bid to enhance maternal and child healthcare. The Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency announced the initiative on its official Facebook page, noting that the services will initially be available at PHCs in Abakpa and Asata every Tuesday from 9 a.m.

To celebrate the launch, all ultrasound services for pregnant women will be free for the first month. After this period, the services will remain accessible at affordable rates. Pregnant women are required to enroll in the Enugu eHealth Platform to take advantage of this new offering, which aims to make quality healthcare more accessible.

This initiative is part of Governor Peter Mbah’s broader effort to revamp primary healthcare services across Enugu State. The governor recently flagged off the construction of Type-2 PHCs in all 260 wards of the state, ensuring that health services reach underserved rural areas. Additionally, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated 60 newly constructed and equipped PHCs in early January, with 200 more currently under construction.

An official from the Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency confirmed that the ultrasound services at Abakpa and Asata are part of the first phase of the rollout. “This is a start-off,” the official said, adding that the state is working to equip all its Type-2 PHCs with essential lab equipment and 24-hour healthcare services once construction is complete.

The introduction of ultrasound services highlights the state government’s commitment to improving maternal and child health. By providing affordable and accessible healthcare options, Enugu aims to address long-standing challenges in rural healthcare delivery while reducing maternal and infant mortality rates.
