Hajiya Huriya Dauda Lawal, the First Lady of Zamfara State, marked World Breast Cancer Day 2024 by advocating for greater support and solidarity with those battling breast cancer. During the commemoration event on Monday, she announced her sponsorship of free screenings and lumpectomy surgeries for 100 selected breast cancer patients in Zamfara, aiming to provide life-saving treatment for those in need. Her efforts, backed by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, reflect a strong commitment to improving cancer care accessibility in the region.
In a heartfelt address, Hajiya Huriya encouraged the community to rally behind breast cancer patients with messages of hope and compassion. “Today, we walked together in solidarity, proclaiming that no one should face breast cancer alone,” she shared. “We stand united, supporting survivors, honoring the strength of those affected, and remembering loved ones we’ve lost.” Her call to action urged Zamfara residents to foster a community of encouragement and hope for all facing this difficult journey.
The First Lady, with support from Governor Dauda Lawal, confirmed that her office had carefully selected 100 women for these critical cancer interventions. “I’m proud to announce that, with the support of my dear husband, we’re providing free breast screenings and surgeries for women who need it most,” Hajiya Huriya stated. “Access to early detection and treatment is essential in our fight against breast cancer, and we’re committed to making it available to the people of Zamfara.”
A commemorative walk was held from the Zamfara Government House to the General Hospital Gusau, led by Hajiya Huriya Dauda and joined by local NGOs, civil society groups, and government officials. The event aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer’s impact in Nigeria, where limited access to cancer treatment remains a challenge for many communities.
To further support ongoing cancer prevention efforts, the First Lady donated 3.5 million naira to General Hospital Gusau for additional free screenings. This funding will help expand cancer screening access within Zamfara, emphasizing her commitment to making impactful healthcare services available to underserved communities and supporting early detection as a life-saving measure in the fight against breast cancer.
