The Federal Government, alongside the Bayelsa State government, has joined forces with Zipline, a global leader in drone technology and logistics, to enhance the state’s medical supply chain.
The partnership was announced in a statement to The PUNCH on Sunday, following the official commissioning of a cutting-edge Zipline distribution centre in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State’s capital. Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri were present at the event.
This new development marks a significant milestone in Bayelsa’s efforts to build a more resilient, self-sufficient healthcare system—especially crucial as global aid disruptions threaten access to life-saving medical supplies.
The distribution centre will serve as Zipline’s operational hub, equipped with advanced warehousing, cold storage, and inventory management systems to facilitate rapid, on-demand medical deliveries. Zipline’s network, covering 38,000 square kilometres, now ensures consistent access to essential medical supplies, even in the most remote areas of the state.
Since commencing operations in Bayelsa in 2023, Zipline has already delivered over one million vaccine doses and more than 71,000 units of essential medicines. The company has also spearheaded several successful vaccination and health campaigns, distributing hundreds of thousands of supplements and tablets across the state.
Building on this success, Zipline is now extending its reach to 73 out of Bayelsa’s 83 wards, further solidifying its role as a key partner in the state’s healthcare improvement efforts. Zipline’s autonomous drones, capable of a 200 km round trip and operating in all weather conditions, are ensuring timely deliveries to hospitals, primary healthcare centres, and remote delivery sites.
The newly commissioned distribution centre is expected to reduce stockouts, enhance emergency response times, and bolster the overall medical supply chain in Bayelsa.
At the commissioning ceremony, Professor Pate emphasized the federal government’s commitment to leveraging technology for improving healthcare access across Nigeria. He stated, “These initiatives reflect our shared commitment to quality healthcare for all Nigerians, regardless of location. Zipline’s drone services represent a bold step toward transforming healthcare delivery.”
Governor Douye Diri noted the positive impact of Zipline’s technology, stating, “Zipline is the solution to the challenges posed by our riverine terrain, enabling timely pharmaceutical deliveries. Over 20,000 zero-dose children have been vaccinated, ensuring a healthier future for our communities.”
Akin Oyediran, Partnerships Executive for Zipline Nigeria, added, “As Nigeria continues to prioritize strengthening local healthcare systems, Zipline is committed to collaborating with the government and local partners to integrate our technology and improve health services nationwide.
