The federal government has unveiled plans to adopt Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to modernize the livestock sector, enhancing tracking, transparency, and efficiency across the value chain. This initiative, announced by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, is part of a broader effort to transform agriculture and boost Nigeria’s position in global livestock markets.
In a statement issued in Abuja by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Ben Goong, the minister emphasized the importance of traceability in addressing challenges such as disease control, food safety, and market competitiveness. Maiha noted that DPI would enable real-time tracking of livestock movements and health, instilling consumer confidence in local livestock products and improving global trade opportunities.
“Adopting digital technology in the livestock sector is no longer optional; it is a necessity,” said Maiha. “Our aim is to make the livestock value chain—from breeding to marketing—efficient, sustainable, and profitable. This approach will also reduce disease outbreaks, enhance productivity, and improve pastoralist livelihoods.”
Ibrahim Maigari, Co-founder of Livestock 247, highlighted the transformative potential of the initiative, describing it as a “game-changer.” He explained that the National Livestock Digital Public Infrastructure would enable seamless livestock tracking, transparency in market transactions, and improved access to animal health services. The digital registry is also expected to provide verified information on prices, breeds, and market trends.
By integrating innovative solutions into the livestock sector, Nigeria aims to streamline operations, reduce zoonotic disease risks, and enhance productivity. This bold step is set to position the country as a leading player in sustainable and technology-driven livestock management.
