The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has introduced the NEXT GEN RESCO Programme, an innovative initiative aimed at advancing the renewable energy sector while contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In collaboration with the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) and the Ecological Innovation Empowerment Initiative (EIEI), the programme seeks to bridge the skills gap in the renewable energy industry by empowering young professionals with essential technical, analytical, and leadership expertise.
According to a statement from the partners, the 12-month programme is now open for applications from young Nigerians. It will select 60 participants to undergo comprehensive training designed to equip them with industry knowledge, mentorship from sector experts, and opportunities to collaborate with key stakeholders in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
“Over the last eight months, the REA has been pivotal in transforming Nigeria’s clean energy ecosystem. The agency’s efforts focus on scaling up renewable energy projects nationwide and fostering sustainable development,” the statement read.
The REA highlighted the programme’s role in promoting improved governance among private sector players, emphasizing the importance of a private sector-driven approach to delivering sustainable and efficient energy services. By partnering with Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs), the agency has secured industry support for better service delivery, innovation, and investment in research and development.
Participants in the NEXT GEN RESCO Programme will gain intensive training in renewable energy systems, leadership development, and hands-on experience with leading companies in the sector. Additionally, they will benefit from networking opportunities with industry professionals and internships tackling real-world challenges in renewable energy.
Upon completing the programme, participants will be positioned to secure key roles in private sector companies, leveraging their new skills to drive growth and innovation in the clean energy industry.
The programme has inclusive eligibility criteria, encouraging applications from graduates with a minimum 3.5 CGPA, a maximum of two years of post-graduate experience, and strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Female applicants are especially encouraged to apply, and current National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Abuja are also eligible.
