The Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) has signed a partnership with WaterAid Nigeria and Armani Beauty to rehabilitate the Akilo Micro Waterworks, a crucial step in expanding access to clean water in the state.

The initiative, part of Lagos’ urban water and sanitation access project, aims to provide potable water to residents of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Council Development Area through household connections and water kiosks.

Speaking at the official contract signing ceremony held at the LWC office in Ijora on Thursday, the Managing Director of LWC, Mukhtaar Tijani, emphasized the significance of the project.

“We recognize the importance of this rehabilitation effort. Before selecting the contractor, we conducted baseline and household studies in the Akilo area to ensure the project’s effectiveness. Once completed, it will benefit 100,000 residents,” Tijani stated.

WaterAid Nigeria’s Country Director, Evelyn Mere, highlighted the project’s rigorous technical assessment and procurement process, ensuring its long-term sustainability.

“Our strategic focus is on interventions that serve large populations. This contract signing is a key step in that direction. Once rehabilitated, the Akilo water scheme will provide safely managed water to 100,000 people,” Mere said.

The Managing Director of Rigmars Projects Limited, Nwankwo Chimechefolam, whose firm was awarded the contract, expressed gratitude to LWC and WaterAid for the opportunity to contribute to the initiative.

According to reports, the Akilo micro water treatment plant, constructed in 2012, features an underground storage tank with a capacity of 10,000 gallons per day and five boreholes. However, only two boreholes are currently operational, and even those are functioning below capacity.

The rehabilitation project is expected to restore full functionality, enhancing water supply and improving residents’ access to clean water.
