In Abuja, the Federal Government has commended Moniepoint Inc. for its role in transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector and empowering smallholder farmers, especially in the conflict-affected Northeast.
The praise came from Dr. Tope Fasua, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs in the Office of the Vice President, during a private screening of Moniepoint’s case study documentary, Inside Nigeria’s Food Chain.
The 12-minute film, set in Borno State, highlights how digital financial services are reshaping rural economies by connecting farmers to markets and driving economic inclusion in areas long overshadowed by insecurity.
Dr. Fasua described the documentary as an “eye-opener,” noting its depiction of farmers’ resilience and the growing trust in digital payments. “It is heartwarming to see the economic and financial inclusion x-rayed in the video with a lot of digitization going on at the level with people who you’d not associate with technology adoption,” he said.
He added that beyond technology, the project showcased the determination of Nigerians in producing grains, livestock, and other agricultural goods despite security and cost-of-living challenges.
Edidiong Uwemakpan, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Moniepoint, explained that the documentary was created to humanize financial data by spotlighting the stories behind rural transactions. “We sought to peel back the layers on the naira and kobo and uncover what they mean for Nigeria,” she said, stressing the importance of Moniepoint’s hyperlocal approach in building trust with rural communities.
She further highlighted Borno State’s agricultural diversity, arguing that the region should be recognized for its contributions to Nigeria’s food security rather than only being defined by conflict narratives.
Communications strategist Tolu Ogunlesi, who also attended the screening, praised Moniepoint for reframing the Northeast’s story. “Many of the towns mentioned became famous not for food but as Boko Haram-affected regions. This project allows us to truly appreciate these areas for their socio-economic contributions,” he said.
Moniepoint, one of Nigeria’s leading fintech companies, said the initiative reflects its broader mission of deepening financial inclusion and supporting national development through technology-driven solutions.
