NiMet Predicts Thunderstorms, Flash Floods Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast from Monday to Wednesday, warning of widespread thunderstorms, moderate rains, and potential flash floods across several regions of the country.

Northern Region:

Monday–Wednesday: Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, and Borno.

Flash Flood Risk: High in Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi on Monday; Taraba again on Tuesday; and Borno, Taraba, Adamawa on Wednesday.

Central Region:

Morning & Evening: Light to moderate rainfall is expected in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, and Benue.

Weather Pattern: Mostly cloudy with intermittent rain through the forecast period.

Southern Region:

Widespread Light Rain: States like Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Edo will experience rain mostly in the mornings and later in the day.

Flood Risk: High in Oyo, Ogun, Edo, Delta (Monday); Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom (Tuesday); Bayelsa (Wednesday).

Safety Advisories:

Avoid driving under heavy rainfall.

Communities in flood-prone areas should activate emergency response systems.

Secure loose outdoor items to prevent wind damage.

Vulnerable populations should dress warmly due to low nighttime temperatures.

Stay indoors during thunderstorms, away from tall trees and electrical appliances.

Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for flight safety.

NiMet emphasized that preparedness and caution can mitigate the impact of severe weather events, particularly in areas with high flood potential.
