NEMA Confirms Death of Nine Jigawa Boat Accident

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the death of nine individuals following a boat mishap in Zangon Maje Village, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

According to a statement shared on the agency’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025. The boat, carrying 17 passengers — mostly young girls — capsized while en route from Digawa Village in Jahun LGA to Zangon Maje.

NEMA’s Kano Operations Office reported that eight passengers were rescued by local divers, while nine others were confirmed dead.

In the aftermath, NEMA, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (JSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and local officials, engaged the community on water travel safety protocols.

NIWA also donated life jackets to the community as part of preventive measures.
