Enugu Begins Work on Unified Health Plan for 2026 Budget

Post Date : July 15, 2025

The Enugu State Government has begun developing Annual Operational Plans to guide its 2026 health sector budget, aligning with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII).

This move was announced at a four-day workshop on health leadership and system strengthening, which began Monday in Enugu. The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emmanuel Obi, explained that the effort is part of a broader reform under the State-Wide Approach (SWAp), aimed at creating a unified and evidence-based health planning system.

Obi noted that the SWAp model, championed by the Federal Ministry of Health, brings together all players in the health sector under a single, coordinated framework to monitor performance and improve outcomes.

“This workshop kickstarts the capacity-building process for key players in the health sector to create a single, comprehensive operational plan that will inform the 2026 health budget,” he said.

Participants include senior managers, programme officers, and stakeholders from across Enugu’s health system. They are expected to work towards a cohesive strategy that ensures coordination between government plans and partner efforts.

Francisca Ewoh, the state’s SWAp Desk Officer, emphasized that the initiative marks a shift from fragmented interventions to harmonized, evidence-based planning. Similarly, the Head of Health Planning, Research and Statistics, Mrs. Ann Oguejioffor, said the training would help eliminate duplication of efforts and align partner contributions with government priorities.

The integrated operational plan is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in Enugu State by ensuring all actors work collaboratively toward shared goals.
