Post Date : July 1, 2025

United Nations agencies have called for stronger investment in Nigeria’s Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) as a critical pathway to inclusive economic growth.

The call was made in Abuja during the 2025 International MSMEs Day, jointly organised by the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), International Labour Organisation (ILO), UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Information Centre, and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

Speaking at the event, Mr. Reuben Bamidele, National Programme Officer at UNIDO, emphasised the importance of MSMEs in job creation and national development. “With over 40 million MSMEs contributing to employment and GDP growth, supporting this sector is essential for Nigeria’s sustainable future,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr. Stephen Agugua, ILO’s National Project Coordinator, noted the agency’s focus on practical solutions to challenges facing small businesses. “MSMEs remain central to our drive for job creation and economic stability,” he said.

Representing the UNDP, Ms. Claire Henshaw described MSMEs as vital engines of innovation and social inclusion, particularly for women and youth. She stressed the need to prioritise them in national development planning.

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), represented by Dr. Chinedu Nnabuihe of ProHealth, acknowledged the resilience of Nigeria’s small businesses despite funding and infrastructure constraints. He reaffirmed NECA’s support for pro-MSME policies.

The event drew participants from key organisations including SMEDAN, NASSI, NASME, CAC, NAICOM, NSITF, and the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Activities featured MSME exhibitions, stakeholder discussions, and presentations on UNDP and WIPO’s support for small businesses.
