A fierce windstorm that tore through Garba Chede and nearby villages in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State has displaced more than 1,800 people and claimed six lives, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed on Monday.
The storm, which followed heavy rainfall on June 2, 2025, left a trail of destruction across Anguwan Amare, Anguwan Hamidu, Anguwan Baki, and Sabon Layi in Kaigama Ward, damaging homes, schools, a church, and a health centre.
According to Mr. Ladan Ayuba, Head of NEMA’s Yola Operations Office, a rapid assessment revealed that over 300 buildings were destroyed or severely damaged. He noted that the agency is working with the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency to finalise a full report to guide relief efforts.
Meanwhile, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has pledged to rehabilitate all affected households. The commission’s Deputy Director of Relief and Mediation, Hajia Batulu Isa, led a delegation to the disaster site, assuring residents of immediate relief materials, including food, shelter supplies, and building materials.
“We have seen the level of destruction, and our intervention will be swift. The report will be submitted to our Managing Director for urgent action,” Isa said.
Local leader, Mr. Hashimu Abdulkadir, confirmed the deaths and reported that more than 30 people sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
“The destruction is widespread. We appeal to the state government and elected representatives to support us during this crisis,” he said.
One of the victims, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, shared her ordeal: “I barely escaped with my six children. We’ve lost everything. We need food, shelter, and clothing.”
The affected communities continue to await comprehensive assistance as emergency agencies coordinate their response.
