The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert forecasting thunderstorms and widespread rainfall across several parts of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet predicted early morning thunderstorms for parts of Taraba and Adamawa, with rainfall extending later in the day to areas including Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Borno, Gombe, and Bauchi.
The North-Central region is expected to start the day with cloudy skies, followed by rain and thunderstorms later, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi, and Benue States.
Southern Nigeria will see light morning clouds with intermittent rainfall throughout the day across states like Oyo, Ogun, Enugu, Lagos, Rivers, and Cross River.
By Monday, thunderstorms and rains will persist in the North, affecting Sokoto, Zamfara, and Bauchi in the morning, and spreading to other states by evening. North-Central and southern states are also expected to experience similar weather patterns, with rains forecasted across major cities and rural communities.
The wet conditions are expected to continue on Tuesday, with isolated morning thunderstorms in the North and rainfall likely across North-Central and Southern regions as the day progresses.
NiMet urged residents to take safety precautions, warning that strong winds could precede thunderstorms. It advised the public to stay indoors during storms, avoid sheltering under trees, and disconnect electrical appliances during lightning activity. Airline operators were also advised to seek detailed weather briefings for flight planning.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated with official forecasts to minimize disruption and ensure safety.
