The British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (BATNF), in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State government, has distributed 2,000 five-week-old Noiler chickens to 100 smallholder poultry farmers. This initiative aims to boost food security, enhance poultry production, and support vulnerable groups, including widows and individuals with disabilities.
Each beneficiary received 20 Noiler birds, a 25kg bag of poultry feed, and 150kg sachets of multivitamins. In addition, the Akwa Ibom government provided a N5,000 transport stipend to ease logistics.
Speaking at the event, Rosemary Ubia, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized that the project aligns with Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE agenda, which focuses on expanding agricultural opportunities.
Oludare Odusanya, General Manager of BATNF, highlighted the project’s goal of improving food security while economically empowering local farmers. “This initiative supports sustainable livelihoods by equipping farmers with essential tools and resources,” he said.
The poultry project also aims to improve local chicken breeds through crossbreeding and promote gender equality by equipping women and youth with poultry production skills. Namokwo Orok, Director of Livestock and Husbandry, affirmed that the initiative aligns with the state’s agricultural development strategy, while Teddy Essien, Director of Veterinary Services, urged beneficiaries to prioritize bird health and productivity.
The selection of beneficiaries was conducted in partnership with the Akwa Ibom Ministry of Agriculture, the Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), ensuring support reaches those most in need.
This partnership reinforces BATNF’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and rural development in Nigeria.
