The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has announced the launch of ‘Operation Empty the Stores,’ a strategic initiative aimed at empowering farmers with modern agricultural tools and inputs to strengthen agriculture and enhance food security across Nigeria.
Marcus Olaniyi Ogunbiyi, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, disclosed this during a one-day workshop in Abuja on Wednesday. The event, themed ‘Building Partnership with the Media for Food Security,’ focused on fostering collaboration between the ministry and journalists covering agriculture.
According to Ogunbiyi, the initiative will ensure the immediate distribution of agricultural equipment and inputs currently stored across the country to farmers. “The items in our stores are meant for farmers, not for storage. We are opening up all stores nationwide to ensure these resources reach those who need them most,” he stated.
Highlighting the critical role of effective communication, Ogunbiyi said the programme states the ministry’s commitment to transparency and engagement with the media to drive public understanding of the agricultural sector. He emphasized agriculture’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s economy, particularly in addressing global economic challenges and promoting diversification.
In his address, Joel Oruche, Director of Information at the ministry, called for stronger media partnerships to educate the public on government policies and initiatives. “Our collective efforts are crucial to achieving food security. The media’s role in informing and sensitizing the public cannot be overstated,” Oruche noted, adding that the ministry has made significant progress in diversifying the economy through various projects and programmes.
Kingsley Osadalor, Technical Advisor for Strategic Communication, also highlighted the importance of well-informed media in advancing food security efforts. “Effective communication will enhance stakeholder collaboration and ensure a shared understanding of the ministry’s goals,” he said.
