Women Affairs Minister Call for Swift Action to Combat Rising Violence Against Women and Children in Nigeria

Post Date : January 22, 2025

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has raised serious concerns about the rising violence, sexual abuse, and crimes affecting women, children, and vulnerable groups in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Monday, she emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues and called for swift action. The minister highlighted the alarming increase in sexual assault, physical violence, emotional abuse, child trafficking, and online exploitation, occurring in various settings, including schools, homes, and communities.

She described these acts as violations of basic human rights and vowed to strengthen national efforts to protect women, children, and vulnerable groups. “We must act now to end the violence,” she said.

The minister also expressed heartbreak over the increasing number of violent incidents against children, reiterating that every child deserves a safe environment free from fear, violence, and abuse.

The call for action follows the tragic death of Youth Corps Member Salome Adaidu, allegedly murdered by gospel singer Timileyin Ajayi. The suspect reportedly killed Ms. Adaidu in a violent attack following claims of infidelity, though her family disputes his story, alleging she was kidnapped. Ajayi was apprehended while attempting to dispose of the victim’s body and has been remanded in custody as investigations continue.

In her statement, the minister outlined ongoing efforts to strengthen legal protections for vulnerable groups. She mentioned the review of laws such as the Child Rights Act of 2003 and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act of 2015, with plans to introduce harsher penalties for offenders.

Additionally, the ministry is working on a National Social Protection Policy aimed at safeguarding women, children, and other vulnerable citizens.

The minister also announced the activation of child protection mechanisms and collaboration with law enforcement and other stakeholders to enhance the coordination of efforts. Plans include the establishment of crisis management centers, helplines, and support services to help victims report abuse and seek assistance.

“We are committed to preventing violence and creating a safer environment for everyone,” Ms. Sulaiman-Ibrahim concluded.
