In a move to improve healthcare services in Rivers State, the West Africa Container Terminal (WACT)-APM Terminals Nigeria has installed solar power systems at two primary healthcare centers in its host communities. The beneficiaries, the Model Primary Healthcare Centre in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area, and the Model Primary Healthcare Centre in Ogu, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, now enjoy a reliable power supply to tackle persistent electricity challenges.
The initiative, which benefits over 25,000 households, aims to strengthen healthcare delivery and enhance the working conditions for medical personnel in the communities. Speaking at the commissioning event, Frederik Klinke, CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria, described the project as a reflection of the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). He highlighted healthcare and education as central to APM Terminals’ global CSR strategy.
“This kind of programme aligns with what we stand for as a company. While we handle containers and facilitate trade, we also see ourselves as partners with the communities we serve. This solar project is a pilot, and we aim to scale up similar initiatives to drive broader societal impact,” Klinke stated.
Jeethu Jose, Managing Director of WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria, noted that the decision to implement the solar power systems stemmed from a thorough needs assessment in Onne and Ogu. The assessment revealed that a steady power supply was the most urgent need for the healthcare centers. He further emphasized the importance of strengthening primary healthcare to ease the burden on secondary and tertiary facilities.
The project received praise from local leaders and government representatives. Okachi Chukwuma of the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board lauded the effort for aligning with the state government’s vision for improving primary healthcare. Similarly, Barr. Christians Tamunobereton-ari, Vice-Chairman of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, commended the solar installations, calling them a critical improvement for the facilities.
WACT-APM Terminals reaffirmed its focus on community-driven initiatives in health, education, empowerment, and the environment. With this solar project, the company aims to not only address immediate community needs but also create a foundation for sustainable growth and development in its operational areas.
