The Rotary International Foundation has approved $2 million in grants to improve maternal and child healthcare in Nigeria under its Programme of Scale initiative. This announcement was made on Tuesday by Past District Governor Victor Onukwugha during a press briefing ahead of the foundation’s Trustee Chairman, Mark Maloney’s visit to the country.
Onukwugha explained that the Programme of Scale is one of four grant types provided by the Rotary Foundation, alongside district grants, global grants, and the disaster fund. He noted that Nigeria is one of only three countries globally to benefit from the initiative, with the funds dedicated to addressing maternal and child health challenges.
Highlighting the significance of Maloney’s visit from January 15 to 20, 2025, Onukwugha said it presents an opportunity for Nigeria to access additional benefits from the foundation. The Trustee Chairman will also review how the grants have been utilized to ensure accountability and continued support.
During his visit, Maloney will participate in a symbolic polio immunization exercise in recognition of Nigeria’s success in eradicating polio since 2020. Rotary’s contributions have played a pivotal role in this achievement, including a $14 million donation from the Nigeria Polio Plus Committee to sustain eradication efforts.
Onukwugha underscored the impact of Rotary’s humanitarian efforts, noting that its global contributions have helped transform Nigeria’s healthcare landscape. He emphasized that the visit marks a rare opportunity, as this is the first time in years a Trustee Chair of the Rotary Foundation will be in Nigeria.
Founded in 1905, Rotary International launched its humanitarian arm in 1917. Over the years, the foundation’s endowment has grown from $26.05 to over $2 billion, enabling it to drive impactful initiatives worldwide.
