The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to take a stand against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), emphasizing its destructive impact on families and society at large. Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement on GBV in Abuja, NOA Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by Barrister Williams Dogo, underscored the urgency of addressing GBV, describing it as a “hydra-headed monster” that affects all genders, not just women and girls.

Issa-Onilu stressed the importance of tackling GBV by fostering attitudinal change and prioritizing the development of human resources. He highlighted the agency’s commitment to promoting behavioral transformation among Nigerians to create a more harmonious society. “Our human resources are a blessing, but the quality of these resources determines the pace and realization of national development,” he noted.

The NOA also unveiled the National Value Charter, a framework developed in response to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for national reorientation and value rebirth. Approved by the Federal Executive Council, the charter consists of the Nigerian Promise and Citizens’ Codes, which emphasize citizens’ duty of care. The DG explained that adherence to this duty of care could help eradicate GBV, urging Nigerians to embrace the principles outlined in the charter.

Director of Public Enlightenment and Mass Mobilisation at NOA, Theresa Maduekwe, added that GBV transcends gender, race, and religion, and it requires a united front to combat its prevalence. She called on Nigerians to break the culture of silence and the fear of stigmatization, which often prevent victims from speaking out. “All forms of violence lead to mental health challenges and, in some cases, death,” she warned.

The NOA reiterated its commitment to addressing the root causes of GBV through continuous public education and mobilization. Stakeholders at the event also pledged to collaborate in creating a society free from violence and promoting the dignity of all individuals.
