Advocates Call for Specialized Courts to Address Gender-Based Violence in Families

The National Council for Child Rights Advocate of Nigeria (NCCRAN) has urged all levels of government to establish specialized courts to handle Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases and promote amicable resolutions within families.

Speaking during a roundtable discussion on Wednesday in Kano, NCCRAN State Coordinator Hajia Aisha Kabuga highlighted the challenges of addressing GBV cases through conventional courts, noting that legal proceedings often worsen family conflicts.

“GBV has destroyed many families and caused immense hardship to husbands, wives, and children. Resolving these issues requires care and attention,” Kabuga said.

The council revealed it had handled over 120 GBV cases in the state, successfully reconciling many families through education and intervention. Kabuga stressed the importance of follow-ups to ensure lasting peace, adding, “We visit reconciled families to support their continued harmony.”

Kabuga also pointed out that interference from extended families often escalates disputes, leading to court cases. She emphasized the need for government-led initiatives to educate communities on conflict resolution and foster peaceful coexistence.

The roundtable brought together stakeholders, including human rights advocates and community leaders, to discuss strategies for curbing GBV. Kabuga urged participants to spread awareness in their communities about the importance of addressing GBV and maintaining family unity.

“The way forward is government intervention through enlightenment and education. Without this, resolving these complex issues will remain a challenge for civil society organizations,” she concluded.
