Rivers State Government Vows to Reduce Gender-Based Violence to 5-10%

Post Date : November 14, 2024

The Rivers State government has announced its commitment to tackling gender-based violence (GBV), aiming to reduce its prevalence to between 5 and 10 percent. Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Ilamu Arugu, expressed gratitude to the Rivers State Multi-Stakeholders Action Committee on GBV prevention for their selfless efforts and cooperation.

The committee, funded by Action-Aid Nigeria, comprises key stakeholders from various ministries, faith-based organizations, and traditional institutions. Their focus is to create a long-lasting impact within communities, ensuring every woman and girl in Rivers State lives free of GBV. According to the United Nations, violence against women and girls affects one in three women globally.

Four sub-committees have been set up: Advocacy, Support Services, Information and Awareness. Traditional rulers and religious leaders will drive the project, with plans to launch an outreach program in Abua/Odual Local Government Area. The committee will work with local leaders to ensure the initiative resonates at the grassroots level.

A 16-Day Activism event is planned for November, convening 150 key stakeholders to discuss and strategize on GBV issues in Rivers State. Approximately N5 million has been allocated to cover outreach activities, advocacy, and support services for GBV survivors.

The committee remains committed to maintaining core components of the outreach, including public sensitization through radio, television jingles, and community-led meetings, despite budget adjustments.
