The Education and Empowerment Centre for Women (EECW), a dedicated non-governmental organization, has successfully launched a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workshop aimed at empowering 60 female secondary school students in Southern Kaduna. This initiative seeks to equip young girls with critical skills in science and technology, addressing the pressing need for increased female participation in these fields. The workshop was held at the Government Girls’ College in Zonkwa, Zangon Kataf local government area, highlighting EECW’s commitment to improving educational opportunities for girls in rural areas.
Mr. Benjamin Dankaka, Programme Officer of EECW, emphasized the significance of the workshop during its inauguration. He explained that the event is part of the Laraba Deyjih Science Innovation Prize for Girls, established in memory of Mrs. Laraba Akpason, who was known for her dedication to service and Christian values. The initiative aims to provide essential STEM education resources to girls who face significant barriers in accessing quality education in rural communities. By focusing on hands-on and problem-based learning, the workshop prepares participants for success in higher education and future careers.
Despite the importance of STEM education, statistics reveal a concerning trend: fewer than 25% of students in Nigeria pursue STEM subjects, with even fewer completing their degrees. This gap is attributed to several factors, including a shortage of qualified STEM teachers, limited resources such as laboratories and computers, and a lack of awareness about the importance of STEM fields. Dankaka’s vision is to create dedicated science clubs for girls, fostering a supportive network where they can share resources and build connections, ultimately driving increased participation in STEM.
The initiative has garnered support from local educators, including Mr. Jonathan Danbaki, Principal of GSS Kagoro in Kaura Local Government Area. He lauded the workshop as a timely intervention that complements government efforts to enhance educational development in the region. Danbaki expressed optimism that the initiative would significantly improve students’ learning experiences by introducing them to necessary facilities and resources often lacking in their schools.
As EECW continues its mission to empower young girls through STEM education, this workshop stands as a critical step toward fostering a new generation of female leaders in science and technology. By addressing the barriers that girls face in accessing quality education, EECW is paving the way for a more equitable future in Southern Kaduna and beyond.
