The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) has announced a N2.8 billion grant from Google.org to Data Science Nigeria, aiming to accelerate the development of AI talent across the country. This initiative aligns with the ministry’s drive to equip Nigerian youth, especially the under and unemployed, with essential AI skills. This grant is part of Google.org’s larger $5.8 million commitment to promote digital skills in Sub-Saharan Africa, furthering Nigeria’s goal of positioning itself as an AI leader on the continent.
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, hailed this support as a significant stride in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey. He stated, “The support from Google is a testament to our commitment to positioning Nigeria as a leader in AI innovation. By leveraging Google’s expertise and resources, we are creating opportunities to equip Nigerians with the skills they need to thrive in the global digital economy.” The new funding aligns with Nigeria’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS), introduced earlier this year, which outlines a roadmap for economic growth and governance improvement through AI.
The grant will support Data Science Nigeria in delivering the DeepTech Ready Upskilling Programme, targeting 20,000 young Nigerians with advanced AI and data science skills. Another initiative, the Experience AI Programme, will provide 25,000 educators with the tools and resources needed to introduce AI to 125,000 young learners, fostering the next generation of Nigerian AI innovators. Additionally, the Government AI Campus Programme will focus on upskilling policymakers, ensuring Nigeria’s AI policies are crafted and executed responsibly.
The collaboration between FMCIDE and Google also marks a significant advancement for Nigeria’s AI startups. Selected beneficiaries of the AI Fund, established by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) with Google’s support, will receive N100 million each, along with up to $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits. These startups will also gain access to Google’s AI tools and mentorship from experts, as well as opportunities to network with global innovators.
Google’s support builds on Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to embed AI in its digital economy. Data shows that the tech industry has the potential to contribute $88 billion to Nigeria’s GDP by 2027, according to PwC Nigeria. With Google.org’s partnership, Nigeria is set to solidify its position as a leader in AI across Africa, equipping its workforce with the skills and knowledge needed to drive inclusive innovation.
