The National Rubber Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NARPPMAN) South-West chapter has urged the federal government and regional leaders to prioritize the rubber industry to stimulate economic growth and job creation.
The association’s Vice President, Oluwatoyin Jeremiah, emphasized the significant economic potential of rubber. “No economy can thrive without rubber,” speaking during the fifth Odua International Trade Fair. He highlighted the commodity’s ability to generate billions of naira and alleviate unemployment.
Jeremiah stated that the high-value chain of the rubber industry, noting its potential to provide employment opportunities for numerous Nigerians. He called on the government to recognize the untapped potential of rubber and implement policies to encourage its cultivation and processing.
Drawing inspiration from the past, Jeremiah pointed to the successful use of rubber by Obafemi Awolowo to develop the South-West region during a time of limited technological advancements and oil revenue. He urged the government to adopt a similar regional approach to revitalize the rubber industry.
He further called on financial institutions to collaborate with the government in providing financial assistance to rubber farmers.
NARPPMAN’s National President, Peter Igbinoson, echoed the sentiment, encouraging young people to embrace rubber cultivation as a viable source of income. By maximizing the potential of the rubber industry, Nigeria can unlock significant economic benefits and secure a sustainable future.
