The Organization of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) has teamed up with UN Women to combat gender-based violence (GBV) across all communities. This partnership aims to engage religious leaders from various denominations, encouraging them to play an active role in preventing and addressing violence against women.
OAIC National President, Israel Akinadewo, made this call in a statement ahead of a two-day sensitization workshop for OAIC’s faith leaders in Nigeria. The workshop, scheduled to begin in Lagos, is organized in collaboration with UN Women, LEAP, the Ford Foundation, and OAIC.
Akinadewo emphasized the importance of the workshop in enhancing religious leaders’ understanding of gender-based violence, its causes, and effective prevention strategies. “There is a pressing need for awareness about gender-based violence, its causes, prevention, and how religious leaders can contribute to its eradication,” he stated.
The initiative is expected to equip faith leaders with the knowledge and tools necessary to address GBV within their communities. This aligns with broader efforts to reduce violence against women and promote gender equality.
